How do you clean the fridge filter

The filter in your fridge is a vital part of the whole appliance, but it is going to need changing occasionally. If it came with the fridge, then you absolutely need to change the filter. It also helps to keep a lot of the parts of the fridge free from contaminants, and generally extend the lifespan.

Here at Repair Aid, we’re used to having to change filters, but we thought we’d talk a bit about how you can do them for yourself and save a bit of time.

Bad Smells?

bad smell

Unfortunately, a lot of people make the mistake of waiting for a visible indicator that the filter needs to be changed. Without being said, you don’t always notice it.

There could be a warning light that goes off four weeks before you do something. In the majority of cases, the only way that people begin to notice that their fridge filter needs changing is the difference it begins to make to the quality of the water that can be dispensed, or the ice.

For example, if your ice begins to smell bad, that’s probably a sign that the filter isn’t working.

Why Change a Filter?

Obviously, it’s very convenient to be able to have ice whenever you want it, or freshwater dispensed. However, if you want to enjoy this convenience, you have to commit to regular maintenance.

Things like settlement, dirt, and even algae can build up in the filter of your fridge. This means that bacteria is going to start to grow, and all it’s going to do is prevent you from getting access to what you want, and even cause you some harm.

How to Change Your Filter

So, a modern fridge will have a filter usually located in the back, towards the top. This will work in tandem with the main filter, which is located at the bottom, or the base of your appliance.

Ultimately, you need to check both. There is usually a button to release them, and you just have to pull or push. From there, it’s largely up to you what you do. Some people clean the filters, which will involve allowing them to sit and soak in a cleaning agent for a bit. Obviously, you don’t want to use anything that would be toxic to people, because they’re going to be generating ice and water. However, most people simply just replace the filter as the easier course of action.

Final Thoughts

Cleaning the filter in your fridge may seem like an annoying maintenance task, but it’s an important part of making sure that your fridge continues to operate at the peak level of efficiency.

You are naturally going to want to make sure that you get the best results from your fridge, and to do this, you do have to look after it. At the end of the day, there are many easy ways to replace a filter, and they’re not that expensive to get for yourself. However, we are happy to do it for you if you want.
